As we become more health conscious there are a great many alluding terms which seem to pop up. Before we can affect real change in our lives it is important to have a grasp of the concepts and definitions, this way terms such as alkaline living don’t feel so remote or unachievable.

What does it mean?

When we talk about alkaline within health it relates back to the goal of keeping the body’s natural pH in balance. The term pH correlates to ‘Potential of hydrogen’ and a measurement of the hydrogen ion concentration in the body. The pH scale ranges from 1-14, with 1 being the most Acidic and this side of the spectrum being the most harmful for the body.

Why be alkaline:

A body in balance will self regulate to a pH level of 7.35, which is in the alkaline territory. The scale is a useful tool when it comes to indicating whether or not you are overly acidic and thus in danger of health repercussions. One benefit is a lowered cancer risk. Carcinogenic cells thrive in oxygen poor environments and as alkaline cells are the most competent at retaining and carrying oxygen around the blood and body there are many experts who promote alkaline diets for combating illness. I highly recommend you watch Kris Carr’s documentary ‘Crazy, Sexy, Cancer’ which tracks her journey after a diagnosis of stage four cancer found in the liver and lungs’ blood vessel linings. After adopting a plant based and alkaline diet, 12 years later she remains in good health running a fantastic site with her experiences, recipes and wisdom.

How to be alkaline:

The good news is that there are many simple ways to alkalise your body and reap its benefits. The most effective method is through diet and adequate hydration. Almost all toxins in the body take the form of acids and they can be neutralised and flushed from the body. These toxins often collect in the bloodstream and the late V.E. Irons a leading authority of therapeutic detoxification for health and longevity regards it as a key indicator for health and disease. He is quoted as saying that ‘every cell in the body is served by the blood. It nourishes the cell, replaces worn out parts, and carries away waste products.’ We can carry this insight towards the lymphatic system also; with almost 700 lymph glands in the body it overtakes blood three times in fluid volume. Its main purpose is to clean acidic wastes from the body and tissues, however the issue lies in if they are polluted themselves as acids interfere with their cleansing potential. In both of the above instances the most effective way to reboot the body is by drinking 2-3 litres of pure water a day. An intrinsic link between water, alkaline and the body is found in nature; with seawater sharing the exact same PH value of blood when at its ideal measurement of 7.3 to 7.4. To give some introspect into how sensitive our bodies are to this scale, if blood pH drops below 7.1 severe symptoms of imbalance will manifest immediately and if pH is not quickly restored to proper balance, serious health issues or death can follow. We call this acidosis and it is the root cause of all internal toxicity that interferes with metabolic processes and immunity; essentially meaning there are adverse effects with weight gain and illness. well coI have been drinking Wellco’s The Super Elixir every morning upon waking. The Elixir is promoted by Elle Macpherson and it is one celebrity endorsement I’ve been happy to get behind. Made of natural ingredients it is a fantastic way to start your wellness journey. A cost effective way to alkalise the body upon waking is to have a warm cup of pure water with lemon (which turns alkaline in the body), ginger and manuka honey. The body is composed of over 70% water and by constantly saturating the system with alkaline water, toxins and pollutants that we pick up from the air and even our shampoo, are flushed out of the kidneys, bowels and skin. I always find that Daniel Reads analogy explains it well when he says;

“this is the equivalent to changing the dirty motor oil in your car, as well as the battery, brake and transmission fluids. The whole mechanism operates more efficiently and produces less toxic waste, when dirty fluids are replaced with clean”

This explanation not only highlights the importance of drinking alkaline but the merits of taking part in colonics as it is in the colon that we excrete a lot of these toxins. If the colon is impacted then a lot of these toxins will seep back into the bloodstream. The average western male carries over 5kg of mucous material in his bowels, none of it faeces but rather accumulated and toxic wastes. Before you embark on a dietary change or spend money on products such as The Super Elixir I would personally recommend a colonic irrigation as not only will your body be reabsorbing existing toxins but an impacted small intestine blocks the intake of nutrients into the body. A great book to read for further information is by Dr Norman Walkers’ Colon Health: The Key to a Vibrant Life:

“The elimination of undigested food and other waste products is equally important as the proper digestion and assimilation of food… the very best diets can be no better than the very worst if the sewage system of the colon is clogged with a collection of waste and corruption.”

My final recommendation for adopting an alkaline life is to step away from tap water and instead invest in mineral water. The more long-term solution is to invest in a alkalising filter for your tap or a micro water device, which restructures water to be ionised and therefore function as an antioxidant.  To introduce alkaline living into your diet reference a food guide here and begin your journey into creating new recipes and flavours.
